Re: Fancy new FAL grip stick

The inside width with a single layer of metal is .625" I had already cut a layer out for an AR15 trigger conversion. Not crazy about how that came out. Looking at RTG parts they have the trigger groups for the HK G3 for $79. There is an auto sear in that package that you would have to remove and des...

Re: Fancy new FAL grip stick

Answering the question mentioned above, the HK trigger groups for the G3, Hk 33,93 and 91 are all .905" wide. The grip stick, at its widest inside is .625" While the sear, hammer, trigger sear spring and hammer spring from the HK's might be used in the MG42, I have yet to hear of someone spending th...

Re: oxy-acetylene welding

I have used MIG on my reweld and it worked well. I made a point of NOT doing long beads (all were less than an inch). No concentrated heat and no warping as a result. The other thought is the idea of cleaning up the inside of the welds. I backed my welds with copper so I did not have a lot of messy ...

Apex has MG42 barrels

I have been away from the site for a while, but while searching the Apex site I see that they have barrels for the 42/53. They are Yugo barrels, apparently a little rough and they have had the cam block on the end removed. BUT, they are priced at $50, which I thought was pretty good. You can link to...

Re: Weld Questions On My Receiver

Thanks Bil - now that you mention it I seem to remember that there were lefts and rights on the rails. My mistake. I agree with Pirate 100% -

It will work, and the nice thing about working metal - if it is wrong you can cut it apart and reweld it (can't do that with a wood project :nana: :nana: )

Re: Weld Questions On My Receiver

Gorby - I would say that theoretically this would be the case. Others may state that a little stronger. I found that when looking by eye down the length of the tacked together receiver, there are few lines that are easliy identified as straight. By looking at it this way, and rotating it (like a chi...

Re: building my dummy mg42

Good point Bil - the piece JD is building is NOT a firearm. The FA gripstick is not enough to make it one. This sounds logical and reasonable, though maybe JD could still remove several of the parts in the gripstick and still have the spring and trigger action work normally. That might be a little a...

Re: building my dummy mg42

Good question. Dunno. Even asking a class III dealer/Mfr might not get you an answer if he hasn't done the same thing in the past.

A GUESS would be that welding the block tot he rails is enough. But I can't say anything about this for sure.

Re: Weld Questions On My Receiver

From what I have read in other posts DO NOT plan on doing all the welding in one sitting. It involves tacking and checking, a little more welding and more checking, then some more. You want to minimize heat to the receiver, so don't do a whole line of weld bead anywhere - almost garanteed to warp. C...

Re: Best Receiver For Dummy Gun

John - where are you located? Someone in your area might agree to meet you and help out with this project (me for example). Since it will be a dummy gun there are few (if any) liablilty issues and many of us like to help our own. I can weld and also machine. Your '42 can be pretty realistic AND safe...

Re: Tumbling 8 mm ammo to clean it...

The media I am using looks a lot like the clay kitty litter, but it does not break like clay. It had a red (polishing rouge) color, and has yet to really get what you would call wet. It doesn't even look damp. If anything the oil is keeping down the dust. I think putting the ammo in a bucket with oi...

Re: Tumbling 8 mm ammo to clean it...

Having hundreds of rounds to clean (maybe hundreds and hundreds of rounds) the idea of wiping each one by hand is not an attractive option. The oil itself is a little interesting, as it does not run off the ammo and pool in the bottom of the can. I would compare it to what is called "way oil," an oi...

Tumbling 8 mm ammo to clean it...

I am looking for opinions- A year or two back I got some 8mm belted ammo from Sportsman or some such dealer at a pretty good price (Romanian?). It came through linked with metal disintegrating links, like for the 1919A4. Ok, I can deal with that. But the ammo and links are pretty well oiled to prote...

Re: Anybody need a tripod for under 300 bucks?

Some information on the light box with the wires - The two wires from the battery box both have "features" on the ends. One is a little flashlight, good for map reading, operating something in the dark. The other device clips on to the sight/periscope, giving you illuminated crosshairs for shooting ...

Re: I have some business in Germany

I would be careful of bringing barrels back into the US. If the bureau of all things fun has required that all imported barrels be torch cut, why would they make exception for you? It might arrive safely only to be handed over to some jerk kid in a customs uniform.

Re: How much WWII German Surplus in Russia (?).

Just a note - ALL the guns listed by Ryton Arms are deactivated. None will shoot. Also, the ones in England cannot (at I understand it) be imported to the US because their deactivation is different than ours. One of theirs would not meet BATFE standards to import here.

Re: How much WWII German Surplus in Russia (?).

I met a couple from England that were manning a booth at a gunshow in Chantilly, Va. Their stuff looked like new USGI canvas slings, mag pouches, pistol belts, Thompson Mags (drum and stick) and some other hardware. There were also a few very nice (new) looking Thompson machine guns on the table. Gu...
