Another new guy here with the same dilemma.

I have lurked around here for a bit, checking out the great info. Seems to be a lot of nice folks here. Unfortunately I didn't find out about this site until I had already bit off a bit more than I can chew!

A bit of background on myself, I'm a former Munitions SSgt USAF, 7 years, and I currently work at a firearms/ militaria online auction house in Ohio http://www.gunrunnerauctions.com/.

Gentleman

I'm new to the forum. I just recently purchased a Class 3 MG42 at the age of 27. I live in Houston TX and will be converting her to 308. Looking forward to absorbing as much info as possible and stoked to be a new owner. Here comes the dreaded 7-9 month wait.

All those months give you an excellent opportunity to learn about your coming MG42.

John Baum, a member here, has published a number of booklets which are translations from original German manuals. They are INVALUABLE. Buy them, study them. You WILL need them.

Congrats and welcome aboard.

Be sure to safely store those 8mm parts, should you have to sell someday, and if it is a WW2 German receiver, it will bring more at auction.

Meanwhile consider going to ApexGunparts.com and buying an M53 parts kit for spare parts, or RTG (www.robertrtg.com) for great prices on individual post war Mg3/mg53/mg42 parts.

You-all gonna have a blast!!!
I did the Nato conversion to my 42 because it was simple, change a 4 parts.
I actually found that the gun works just fine - Most of the time - with the 8mm cover u. feed tray.
However best to do the full 4 part conversion and never have to worry about it.

Hello all,

My name is Shawn and I work for Paladin Tactical LLC in Windsor, CO; an FFL/SOT that is licensed to deal in class 3 firearms. I've only worked for Paladin since January so I'm pretty new to the whole belt-fed thing. I have a lot of questions that keep cropping up and when I do a search online, this forum keeps popping up so I thought I might as well join and start asking questions myself.

Paladin currently has a post-86 MG74 and I am really curious about how to best keep this beast running!

I have the Austrian army MG74 operator manual translated to English if that helps. It's the same gun as the MG42, except for the trigger group, which is select fire.

Hi John,

I think that we've actually exchanged emails about those manuals. I will actually be putting in an order for those very soon!

Greeting all, just got the aok to become a member. Thought I might start here. Still kind of learning my way around this site, so please bear with me. After reading some earlier posts, that's not meant to be a pun. But anyway, I've recently been bitten by the MG 42 bug, and have the crazy notion to try building one in 308, semi auto. At least as a start. I've built a few ARs, and "tinkered" with an FAL, but this is all new territory. So for now, I'll just sit back and start doing my homework, and I hope you all will please tolerate some stupid questions every now and then. Thanks.
