MG-34 .308

Post by Franz20 »

So I'm converting my MG-34 to .308 live fire.

What needs to be changed?

-Barrel (in the process)

-Topcover?

-Feeding Pawls?

-feed tray?

What can be used from my 8mm set-up? (If anything?)

Franz20,
Do you have a copy of "Folke's" books on the MG34 and MG42 (?)......good write-up on the conversion that Norway did after WWII to convert the MG34 to .308

Make it easy on yourself....."Bergflak" has an MG34 .308 Top-Cover and Feed-Tray for-sale on his web-page..... They were on his for-sale-page yesterday.

Tell him "Blanksguy" sent you.

*****Not an Ad***************

Franz20,
Two quick photos of what Bergflak has for sale on his web-page.

Note....I'm not sure if Ohio-Ordnance-Works still has/makes MG34 .308 barrel....but you can check with them.

So do I need to change all that even if I continue to use 8mm belts with .308? (I think they will fit).

Thanks for your help!

Franz20.
Answer........"Maybe".

Each MG34 is different onto itself. A small number of MG34s will operate with just changes to the barrel, and booster-cup/"Nozzle".......others will require a change to the feed-tray.......still others may require the 7.62x51mm belts as they do not hold the cartridge-case as "tight" as the 8x57mm belts..........still other MG34s will require the top-cover changes to adequately feed in the correct direction/angle into the chamber.

Those two photos from Bergflak's web-page will give you a good starting point........just remember that Bergflak only has the one set of MG34 .308 top-cover and feed-tray........when it's gone you'll have a lot more R&D work on your hands. (first-come....first-served.).
.....and yes, Bergflak is a very reliable seller on our MG42-Board.

Basically, bare minimum changes would be the barrel change to 7.62x51mm and lightened, and booster-cup/"Nozzle" (smaller exit hole-size).
...............
.....................
..........."BUT", Norway already did an excellent job of adapting the MG34 to fire 7.62x51mm reliably enough for you to not "re-invent the wheel". A copy of both of Folke's books on the MG34 and MG42, and that "set" of parts will answer the next questions as to:
What parts do I need to change in the top-cover (?)....and how much "angle" to feed the shorter .308 (?)..
How do I adapt a cheap/spare feed-tray (?).
Who can adapt a spare top-cover and/or make these parts (?).
What size restriction for the booster-cup/"Nozzle" (?).

Where is this information on the MG42-Board (?)............
............I do not believe that it is. To do a reliable conversion, one must buy original parts and/or do all of the R&D work by hand. As there was never a big calling for a .308 conversion for the MG34 in the past........you could be the new POC for this information and/or make and sell conversion sets (?).

Last, what were the answers when you contacted Ohio-Ordnance-Works about .308 MG34 barrels (?).......
.....and: What have been your results at the range with the modification that you have tried so far (?)....and what have you changed in your MG34 (?).

Franz20,
I have posted the two photos of the parts from "Brian's" web-page at BRP-Corp.
I am not sure if they are still sold by BRP-Corp or just an old ad.

They should help you understand more of what needs to be changed/adapted.......if you want to move forward on firing .308 in your MG34.
