I picked up a couple of Yugo 8mm ammo cans from Apex when they were on sale for $11 a couple of weeks ago.
I started stripping the thick Yugo paint off planning to repaint them. I didn't take any before pics, but the paint was ugly green and filthy, but for the money good project 8mm cans IMO.
I assumed these would be post war Yugo cans, but after finding a maker stamp (no waffens) on the top of one I think at least one is German (left 1st pic)). I wondering if it is WWI, pre-war, WWII or post war, this one has strap handles on both ends. The other (left 2nd pic) has no stamps at all and only one front side strap handle. and has riveted corner ends.
Any idea on pre-war, wartime or post war - Yugo or German?

If I had to guess I would say the marked one is Pre-WWII.
Is the marked one the one on the right in the first picture?

The marked one is on the left in the first pic, right in the second. I was thinking pre-WWII as well, but I know nothing about markings. The other is unmarked. I think you are right though about it being pre-war.MP44 wrote:If I had to guess I would say the marked one is Pre-WWII.

I just put a coat of field gray paint on them, they look much better BTW.
Most of my stuff I have is post war, M53 or MG3 related. I like learning as much as collecting though.
Thats said, I did a little digging and if I were a betting man I'd say this is the company that made the early can:
http://translate.google.com/translate?h ... rev=search I can't find much else. Interesting though...
Is the other can post war Yugo?
Re: 8mm ammo can ID
The riveted can is a pre-war MG08 can, great find, the other can't help you
Re: 8mm ammo can ID
You did really good for 11 bucks each.
Re: 8mm ammo can ID
Thanks for the info guys.
Might be worth rolling the dice for a few more, though it looks like the sale is over and they are now $15. You never know what you might get, might get Yugo, might get a German can or both. Be warned they will need cleaned and most likey need the yugo paint stripped as they are really ugly out of the box.
Fun winter project though.
