MG42 tools

Post by JBaum »

There are two tools shown on page 20 of the MG42 armorer's manual. One is for the pressure plate contour, the other is firing pin protrusion, shape, and extractor.

I'm thinking about getting some of these made from laser cut stainless steel. Right now it looks like around $30 for the pair (including postage).

I don't want orders, nor deposits, I'm just asking if there's any interest. No sense in wrapping up $1,000 for something nobody wants.

Here's a pic of what intend to make. The top tool is for the firing pin protrusion and firing pin point shape. The little hooked part is for the extractor.

The rectangular piece with the curved top is used to check the pressure plate shape, to make sure the plate has the proper contour to direct the cartridge from the belt into the chamber.

These gauges have been laser cut from stainless steel according to the dimension drawings on page 20 of the 1944 MG42 armorer's manual HDv 181/7.

The pressure plate gauge checks the curve of the finger which guides the cartridge from the belt and into the chamber. Hold it up against the pressure plate (knob goes forward). If it doesn't match, correct the pressure plate till it does.

The firing pin gauge has a Min. and Max. recess for checking the firing pin protrusion. Remove the bolt housing from the bolt head. Slide the bolt rollers to the outside, push the firing pin holder fully forward. Use the gauge to check how far the firing pin point sticks out.
The little hook should slide under the extractor. If it doesn't, then a cartridge probably won't either and there's a problem. The slot with the rounded bottom is for checking the contour of the firing pin point. I guess it's for when you need glasses and don't have them, so you can see if the point is deformed.

Pictures are below. 1/16" thick stainless steel, laser engraved as shown.

$30 for the set, delivered by first class mail to US addresses.

Tools are sold as a set. If you only want one, it's OK - but let me know which one you want for $30.

Foreign sales are fine, postage is at actual cost. Check or money order is good (address is below).
Paypal is OK, but add $1 to help cover cost ($31 total).

Get 'em while you can. This was way too much trouble to do another batch, so when they're gone, that's all.

I would like to pick up a set of these also.

Are they marked/engraved as your photo shows (?)....and what would be the best way to contact you w/payment (?).....wait until they are ready to ship and have you contact us (?) or to go through your web-page where you sell your manuals (?).

Regards, RichardS in MI.

Contact/pay however you like.... my address is in the message, my email is at the bottom of these messages. If you want one, send a PM or an email and say so. Cash, check, money order, or Paypal (add $1) - your choice.

The FedEx guy delivered the box today. These gauges are sitting here waiting for a new home. The gauges you will receive are as in the picture. The lettering you see is laser etched on the steel. I have over $1,000 in this little project (yes really). They're not junk, these are a high quality product = not real cheap, but they'll last a lifetime.

When the supply gets down to the last 10 or so, I'll post a message saying so.
