are 2 completely different things and ATF does distinguish between the two.
Now if the MG-42 were mag fed or like the MG-34 with the doppel trommel they get kinda quirky on that. I say this because I have two letters like Orinâ€™s where one calls the Bren a 922R applicable weapon and one doesn't.
As it is in it's original configuration the Bren should NOT require 922R parts however I believe the manufacturer of the semiautomatic version available did not insist that the weapon was not applicable and therefore submitted his sample and made notes regarding the displacement of certain original parts for compliance to 922R.
ATF will gladly not say anything about this if you do not bring it up and show why the weapon is non-applicable. As far as their concerned the more trouble you have put into constructing your firearm the better. Now try and pull this with a weapon that is actually classed as a "rifle". They will call you on that
