Post by 762x51 »

ATF REVISES CLASSIFICATION - SEE: http://www.panzer46.net/mg42board/viewtopic.php?t=2018

Here ia a copy of the classification letter which I received today

Good new for us because we now know that our Semi-Auto MG42's do not have to comply with 922(r)

Regards,
Orin

Orin,

Thanks for sharing the information on what the SA MG42 is! I have saved a copy and printed a copy to go with my other records on the gun! Your hard work is appreciated.

Thank you Orin, this should clear up some debate and help in the next phase of homebuild firearms.

You're welcome guys - Next step is to finish up my SA MG42 and get it submitted.

Not much left to do - Just need to do it...:D

It will be nice to have a letter that says our re-constructed receivers are OK

Aint that cool now. Great job Orin! :D

Remember everyone that shoulder supported and shoulder fired are 2 completely different things and ATF does distinguish between the two.

Now if the MG-42 were mag fed or like the MG-34 with the doppel trommel they get kinda quirky on that. I say this because I have two letters like Orin’s where one calls the Bren a 922R applicable weapon and one doesn't.

As it is in it's original configuration the Bren should NOT require 922R parts however I believe the manufacturer of the semiautomatic version available did not insist that the weapon was not applicable and therefore submitted his sample and made notes regarding the displacement of certain original parts for compliance to 922R.

ATF will gladly not say anything about this if you do not bring it up and show why the weapon is non-applicable. As far as their concerned the more trouble you have put into constructing your firearm the better. Now try and pull this with a weapon that is actually classed as a "rifle". They will call you on that

I think everyone else already said it but, THANK-YOU ORIN!

I read and re-read the letter and I must say, that is without a doubt the most straight forward answer I've seen AFT give. Looks like you "got them by the short-hairs" as my old man used to say.
