MGz34 vs MGz40 optical sights

Post by sam game »

Are MGz40 optical sights more readily available than MGz34s or the contrairy? Does somebody have production figures for both models? Is there any significant differences in performance between the two models? Which one is the best and preferred among the lucky members who own both? Thanks in advance.

the 34 is more robust and better made in my opinion. for a few years you could buy the 34s for 1000 and they were common. now they are scarce and pushing 2500 regularlry. the 40s are all over ebay.de but are in rough shape on average. hard to answer questions. -matt

Another oddity is that mgz sights almost always have the transit cans while mgz40 sights are usually missing the cans. Go figure.

I understand that when the mgz 40 sights were issued, they put the cans in the transit boxes the guns came in!Now if we can just find where they left them..... ---bil :?

Well, if the Germans made a box for it, what would the label say? :wnana: :wnana: :wnana:

There is another aspect to the "rarity" issue and that is the manufacturers code. If you are looking for any example or mgz or mgz40 sight, then the manufacturer does not matter so sights are easier to find. If you wind up like me and are looking for specific mgz40 codes, then the "rarity" factor increases. A given code may not be rare in and of itself, but if you don't have that one, then it's rare. For mgz40 sights, the most common are cxn, cme, gug and ddx. Everyone but me seems to have a ddx, so to me, that code is rare. Bwt and dpw are seldom seen, but I have those so now to me, they are no longer "rare." Then you can get into colors: some are gray and some are tan and some codes have both tan and gray samples. Reidar has one that is made from tan and gray parts so it is two colors in one scope. Pretty rare i would think.

Hey Ed S,

I really have a hard time understanding why you collect JUST the optics without first owning perhaps one gun and lafette to put them on. You don't collect toilet paper rolls, do ya ? I might have a few rare ones...

First of all; Ed meant the storage/carrying box for the MgZ's, not my favorite the Portuguese transit box :puk:

I think it is all down to pritty easy maths!
The MGz's on the market are pritty much all from the Norwegian army. They sold at least 300 of these to one specific dealer in Europe WITH cans and accessories (he is all sold out!). This flooded the market with complete, early items. But as always; the demand was bigger than the available numbers and they are now worth gold...
The MGz40's for sale are pritty much veteran pick ups ("Hey, nice optics, but toss the box!"), or battlefield post-action found in Europe - thrown on Ebay. The MGz's seems to have been dominant in Norway, as they all arrived early.......and never left....

Ed-thanks for the glimpse of a small portion of your collection.I am glad to see they are all being kept in a protective environment, and will be well cared for.Not stuck on a lafette and dragged around the countryside,as we know certain jealous individuals would do with them! [I won't say who,but his initials are DA!] :? ---bil
