Looks like German Police "Gendarmerie" an NCO 4 years of service {Badges & Insignia of the Third Reich- Brian Leigh Davis} color photos could further define. :cross: He has a Iron Cross Second Class (ribbon) and a Combat Infantry Badge

This is my wife's grandfather. It was always known he was "in the war on the German side" but everyone assumed he was just some behind the scenes clerk or something. He never talked about it, and no one in the family really cared. When I saw the picture, I knew those assumptions were wrong. It took a lot of digging, but I've got it all about figured out through relatives. He's an Oberwachtmeister in Polizei-Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 18. Basically a First Sargent, Police unit in the Mountain Infantry. Did most of their fighting in Finland, Yugoslavia and little bit in Greece in between. Along with the Iron Cross 2nd class, and the Infantry Action Badge is the top of his wound badge in the picture. He was Born in Yugoslavia(Croatia) in 1924 to parents from Austria and Yugoslavia, so he grew up in both countries.
He joined the German Army in early '42 and stayed with the 18th regiment until the end of the war. The grenade blast that hit him in the shoulder, killed his brother in '44. When the war ended he escaped to his home in Yugoslavia, and then they all escaped to Austria to join the rest of his family.
After the War he went to work for the USAF working on trucks and such. The family of an American he became friends with sponsored his family to move to the US on '49.
