Won't go togeather????

Post by rgus48 »

The MG34 kit I bought will not fit together? The front is a pristine 1942, the receiver is saw cut and lightly welded together. When I try to install the pin from the receiver into the front end it is extremely tight and even when I get it fully inserted it will not turn. Is it possible that changes were made in production and some units made at different time will not fit together as they should? What am I doing wrong? :?

Pic would help.
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.

You should measure the OD and ID of the mating parts and some folks on the Board here could provide some reference measurements. :cross:

As you surely know the tolerances on these are tighter than a drum. I had a DOT shroud that fit VERY tightly on my reweld, in fact I needed a c-clamp to gently encourage the final fit. Yes I should have at that point stripped the dura-coat-which really does not work well for the '34 b/c it is luger-tight, and then attempted the fit but I was impatient.

Nonetheless it works flawlessly (knock on wood) thus far, as for a barrel change well that will be rough should I need one--luckily the novelty of having it gives me more oodles than shooting it.

Make sure your receiver pin that fits into the shroud is not out of spec--see if it has a lean/warp to it. The pictures are great but it almost looks like a new one was put into the receiver, just a possibility.

:eureka: An alternate solution is get a hold of a front section or pin and try it in the shroud.

I agree. I am leaningon the pid damage idea. Lets face it it stickes out there, not pertected, someone drops the receiver there are good odds the pin gets hit first. I really feel it may be bent just enough to cause problems. Where can I get a pin or the front of a cut receiver to check? I know there is an auction on GB right now with 20 lbs of cut up receiver parts. I hate to buy all of it for just one of the pins. Is ther a place that might have what I need?

You can always also try www.BRPguns.com Brian use to have '34 receiver parts left over, but that was years ago; www.Apexgunparts.com use to sell badly de-milled '34 receiver sets, they were fairly cheap-also an option.

I wish I had one to send you , but I do not :(

IMO it's not the pin that's bent, looking at what I can see of the end of the pin there is no sign of damage, I would think some impact damage/marks to be there if it were hit with enough force to knock it out of shape. If you could get your hands on another barrel jacket and receiver you could try to find out which is causing the problems. I have one that's a snug fit and it's made a lot easier if I press down hard on the release button when joining the two together. Jonathan.

The first time I tried to put the bbl jacket and the receiver together it took all I could do and a rawhide mallet to get them completely inserted. They still wouldn't rotate together. After lubrication and a good scrubbing they go together very tight but without any force other than muscle. They still don't rotate but I think that might be the latch. I think we are getting there maybe.
