Hi

this system has been use to mid 43, hope your MG is , it has been abandoned at the same time as the flat carrying handle.
and unfortunately early MGs have often been upgraded during or after the war , with the ordinary post mid-43 bipod, that's why it s common to see it on WWII photos, and very scare to find today.

Very interesting. I was always curious what the longer bipod stud was for. I'm assuming the short one I have is just a replacement for a standard 34? Now to find the rest of the parts for this conversion.

yes the short one is the 2nd MG34 version (the early one was round)
