Care of Canvas and Leather Gear

Post by joe6167 » Fri Feb 14, 2020 4:43 pm

I've got a nice pile of Yugoslav M53 gear, gunners kits, gurtrommel carriers, a breech cover, etc. all of which are pretty grimy and thought I would ask for suggestions and advice on how best to clean/protect/preserve such canvas and leather gear, before I dive in and damage anything.

As well, any suggestions on how to care for all the slings and straps?

I'm not exactly sure about canvas care, I vaguely recall the military used to use some type of thin wax for waterproofing/protection. I think the biggest danger with canvas is if it gets and stay wet for a long period of type it can develop a type of mold. For leather I know the guy who runs At The Front recommends Neatsfoot Oil for his K98/MG42 slings. I have used it when I make leather axe covers and it appears to soften the leather well, it does need re-application every few years.
