Yugoslav M53 Gear

Post by joe6167 » Fri Feb 14, 2020 4:51 pm

As I've accumulated a nice set of Yugoslav M53 gear, I thought I would put together a thread documenting all this good stuff.

I've picked up two gunner's kits from different sources and the contents were identical, as follows:

-Gunner's Kit Pouch
-Oil and Solvent Cans
-Booster Cone Scraper
-2x Bore Brushes
-Chamber Brush
-Chamber Jag
-Flash Hider Wrench
-Ruptured Case Extractor
-Extractor Removal Tool
-Oiler
-Pull-through Rope
-3-piece cleaning rod
-Spare Bolt Parts Pouch: (2x Ejector Bars; 2x Firing Pins; 1x Ejector; 2x Extractors; 1x Extractor Retainer; 2x Extractor Springs)

Parts Numbers on some of the tools:
S-114-51259 Extractor Tool
S-112-118871 Tool Kit Bag
114-119778 Flash Hider Wrench
S-443-56668 Ruptured Case Extractor
S-114-66338 Oil Can

Oil and Solvent Cans, Oiler and Booster Cone Scraper.

Note the language change on the cans, and the painted and unpainted caps. On one set the Part Number is stamped on the Oil can, and on the Solvent Can for the second set. Same Part Number though.

Cleaning Rod, Brushes and Jags and a Yugo K98 et al cleaning kit.

the pull-throughs included in the M53 kits are the same as the one included in the K98 kit. I don't quite get what it is for. If it had screw threads on the end to screw on a bore brush I could understand, but it doesn't. The pieces on the ends are metal (maybe lead?) covered in some kind of white stuff.

Between the two sets of cleaning rods I noticed, excluding the main segment with the eyelet, three different lengths of rod.

The K98 Cleaning Kit also includes a rather nice muzzle guide, that's even got rifling in it. Unfortunately it's back on another continent at the moment... Gotta love the Yugoslav simplicity... just a simple piece of twine to wrap up the kit! Otis Tech, eat your heart out...

Yugoslav Soft-shell Gurtrommel Carriers. Seeing these and seeing what the Germans concocted to carry gurtrommels is absolutely hilarious. Why couldn't the Germans think of a simple pouch! Note that there is even a piece of STRING to hold the gurtrommels in place!

The trim around the pouches seems to be some kind of synthetic material rather than leather.

Note the different methods of attaching the sling to the pouch: on the left the sling is run through leather loops on the sides and bottom of the pouch; on the right it is just stitched on.

[edit]: Don't know why these photos (and others in this thread) show up rotated when you click on them. John, is this something you can fix?

The Breech Cover.

What is the correct manner of application? With the pistol grip or the charging handle through the leather hole? The Pistol Grip seems to fit perfectly through the leather hole, but I've seen MG34 Breech Covers that have a small round hole to accommodate the MG34 charging handle.

And some variations on slings and straps.

The top two are ammo can slings, but I've also seen them described as being slings for the (Czech) ZB30 machine gun as well, but as Wikipedia notes:
Yugoslavia: The ZB Model 30J was produced under license as, Пушкомитраљез 7.9mm модел 1937". 15,500 were bought in 1936.
The middle three are of course Lafette Slings.

The bottom two are M53 slings.

My M53 came with THREE M53 slings, but only ONE sling for the Lafette... VODKA, it's a hell of a drug...

First post.

Here is a link to a youtube video of a Serbian (who is speaking Serbian, but you can figure out) as he explains how all the parts in your Yugo M53 kit work. This guy has some impressive videos of different East block weapons in full auto action.

The straps with matching hooks on both ends are for carrying ammo cans.
