MG1 Top Cover Combatiblity

Post by dehavilland » Sun Aug 02, 2020 2:40 am

I am trying to make a M53 look more MG42 like. The M53 top cover has the big Yugo crest on it. Since finding an original MG42 top cover has proven to be an expensive route, can anyone tell me if an available MG1 top cover is compatible to be mated to a M53? Will all the top cover internals from a M53 top cover switch over to be installed on a MG1 top cover with no problem? Externally, do they look the same? While violating the purity of the M53, I can be content if I can make it look more like a MG42. Thanks for your input.

A MG1 top cover is for .308. Some of the MG1 internals are different from a M53, e.g. ( connector link, bolt guide, cartridge guide). I believe you can interchange the feed fingers.

I tried to attach a photo of both covers, but have failed.
A MG1 cover will mount on a M53 with the correct feed tray and shoot 308.

Top-Cover should fit and function just fine...….as long as Feed-Tray and Barrel-Assembly are matched for caliber to the Top-Cover.
If you do have issues, you should check the usual problem areas/parts...…...such as Recuperator-Assembly, Barrel-Booster-Cup/"Nozzle", Recoil-Spring-condition, correct-ammo-belts, etc..
