Yugoslavian ON-M59 Sight

Post by joe6167 » Fri Dec 20, 2019 7:37 am

I've seen a number of people and places trying to pass of the Yugoslavian ON-059 sight as being intended for, or at least adaptable to the Lafette Tripod, and I thought it would be nice to give a definitive explanation that people can find if they are ever confronted with one of these.

This sight was designed for the M57 Anti Tank Rocket Launcher and mounts on a bracket similar to the bracket found on the Lafette, though on the M57, the Bracket is vertical, while on the Lafette, the bracket is horizontal.

Therein lies the first clue: how many optics can be offset by 90 degrees and still be useful?

As well, there is only a single adjustment knob, which controls elevation. On the Lafette, it now sets "windage".

Photo from a shop trying to sell the ON-M59 sight as being an accessory for the Laftette. I wonder if they tried actually looking through the eyepiece???

Finally, the reticle itself is clearly designed for a rocket launcher and has graduations only to 400m.

Added bonus: note that the shape of the eye-cup is oriented to fit the right eye of the firer, while when on the Lafette, it is now (probably) being looked through via the left eye, and the cup has to be rolled back.

I think in our case most people are not out to fool a buyer as any serious buyer knows better...but rather a lot of guys with Yugo set ups (M53 and Yugo Lafette) just want to fill the void of the gap for a sight.

At least in my case this was the goal ( I have 2 on my Yugo Lafette's along with a post war MG3 lafette and scope). I only use the Yugo RPG site to see the holes poked in the paper from my semi M53 builds. German WWII optics sight look nothing like these as any buyer would know.

Pretty sure most buyers advanced this far to buying a $40K MG is not going to be fooled by this Yugo RPG site and I see nothing wrong with one to fill a void on a lower tier semi auto setup.
