Charging Handle pulls out

Post by Waffentag » Tue Jun 09, 2020 7:19 am

Now and then , when pulling the bolt back I inadvertently pull out the charging handle. At a shoot, it is a real pain in the neck.

I noticed that the guide that holds the handle against the receiver is more open toward the back. Should the distance for that rail to the receiver be the same from front to rear? Will a block of wood and a hammer fix this issue?

Any thoughts?

If the charging handle is coming out, you need to tweak the arm until it stays in the gun. You have tension pushing the end of the charging handle out as soon as the end clears the slot in the receiver and jumps off the bolt.

Also, your stock should keep the charging handle from being fully removed, something to also look at.

When I pull the charging handle back and up the charging handle stays in. When I get forgetful and pull back and down, it pulls out.

Maybe some photos will show the rail that holds the charging handle is more open to the back.

I think it is time to take the German approach and use force, maybe a hammer. 😳

Is this an original gun or a welded receiver?

Your charging handle has redundant means of holding it in place or stops.
1.) the buffer when properly latched blocks the track for the charging handle
2.) the front hook of the charging handle should hit the tit sticking out of your ratchet plate BEFORE reaching a rearward enough travel to come out. You should have to physically manipulate the charging handle to get the hook to clear the tit. Only once clear of this tit should your handle be able to fall out..

That bevel should not come into play as the handle should stop before reaching it. In my opinion, playing armchair gunsmith across the inter webs..

Thanks, I emailed a well
knows MG Gun Smith. Bob N.

It seems like an easy fix, no hammer unfortunately ☹️

OK “Pat:
It appears that the end of the guide plate is bent outward a bit. I suggest using a C clamp to compress it inwards slightly so it is in alignment with the forward part of the rail. Don't compress it too far so as to bind the handle.
There is a raised tab at the rear of the guide plate that is there to grab the claw of the handle that keeps the handle forward when firing. If the claw can go over that tab without catching on it, the handle will disengage from the guide. If you raise the claw slightly that should allow it to catch the claw and prevent the rear of the handle from moving past it.

Bob”

Great example of how one learns how guns work. I can think of no greater curse, and blessing, than a Mg42 that functions perfectly when first procured.

I followed Bob Ns’ advice and it completely fixed the problem.

Now, the only way to pull the charging handle out is to take the stock and buffer off.

All is good!

PS, to answer an earlier question, it is a C&R.
