CRA Shroud Date Stamp

Post by MauserSp66 » Tue Apr 21, 2020 10:29 am

So it looks like my CRA shroud extension was scrubbed at some point. In doing so, it lost the 94 in the 1941 date stamp. I've had a really hard time finding individual stamps to fill in the missing 94 in the correct font. Any ideas? :?

My "CRA" shroud looks exactly like yours, with the date cleanly polished out. Can't tell what it ever was.

I smell a rat here...Phil

Like this, date is scrubbed out perhaps when the serial-number was revised...Phil

What you’re seeing in OP is a shroud that was scrubbed to make a clean surface and renumbered post war. Sometimes the manufacturer code gets lost as well. The WaA, being shallow, are the first to go.

Maget had their own font so there’s no stamps to repop it. A master engraver could probably come close, but that’s going to cost. I’d advise leaving as is rather than trying to self restore, unless you have great talent.

It’s still a CRA and we still know the date. If you alter it, collectors won’t want it, so buyers are limited to the ignorant who think they are buying something original.
