Re: Cold Steel Receiver Build

Post by Sd.kfz.173 »

Thanks for the ideas guys, what appears to have happened is the release lever on the cocking handle is moving to far to the rear before engaging the bottom leg on the ratchet plate , so I am not getting the full "caming action" from the cocking handle. Would it be feasable to weld a piece of steel on the rear of the of the ratchet plate leg , or even on the cocking handle arm where it engages the bolt ? or should I just grind off the modified catch on the bolt and re-weld it further forward ?

Sounds like you already know what needs to be done to make it correct! I would move your cocking "sail" on your bolt forward. Also I had to place a small tack weld in the area where the cocking handle "leverages" the reciever because it was wearing and to soft for continued use. But the tack welds are ussually harder than the base metal and once I profiled it correctly it works great and no more wear!

Thanks matt, I figured it would be easiest to just re-weld the catch forward. You also answered a question before I asked it  I am having trouble with the leverage area also and was going to ask about a fix for the area .Thanks:thumbs:

Would anyone be interested in the front receiver section I removed from my CS receiver ? 8) Here's a few photos of it ,it is about 1 1/2 inches in length.Might work as a filler piece or something

I have the same piece left from mine! I am going to use it to knock out some new thicker buffer cams for my M53. The ones I ordered from rtg were kinda wimpish compared with what you could use.

Sure if the camming piece fits it correctly It would save me some work on my IMA ;)

Howdy all..Finally able to get back on line. Looking for a couple barrel extensions for the 42 , might anyone have a few they would be willing to part with? Also looking forward to getting back to working the bugs out of my build! :woot: :snoopy:

Well! great to hear from you again! I couldn't help but notice the "work the bugs out" comment. I will be the first one to agree that this build has been about the most FTF (file to fit) that I have done! But that is mostly because of the cold steel reciever blank. :ot: I thought the fal castings I have done were bad but this is a little more involved than even those. Also was it just me or did anyone else find that those century fal castings were warped or bowed front to back, I even talked to the guys at century about it and he said that was the way he got them too! He just used a 500 ton press to straighten his! Anyway can't wait to get the skinny on where you are at on your build!

Well I finaly got to fire the 42 today! :woot: Everything (almost) worked perfectly :cross: ,She fed the belt , ejected , was a lot more accurate than I expected, 8 rounds in a 3" group at 100 yards. :wnana: . Now for the $@#%!#& problem , it will not strip the next round from the belt. The feed tray has plenty of clearance ,no hangups from the belt or drum, feed pawls work perfectly. Can ANYONE give me an idea what to try next ?
Right now I have a "Bitchen" looking single shot!, would really like make it go bang without having to feed it one at a time ! :puk:

If the cartridge is moving up and letting the bolt pass under it without stripping it from the belt, it's the pressure plate that's the problem.

With the cover open, slowly let the bolt go forward to make sure the stripper nose is hitting the rear of the cartridge. It should hit it by almost 1/16".

Make sure the spring under the pressure plate is good. Also check the shape to make sure it's proper.

Is there any kind of tool or gauge one could buy to do this? :)

I hear there is a guy on this site that is selling them really reasonable-I would think everyone would want one to check these 60 year old parts! :D ---bil

Thanks jbaum, It looks like that's the problem. After about 3/8 inch of travel the base of the cartridge appears to lift up , allowing the bolt to continue forward, under the shell. The pressure plate spring appears to be fairly stout ,but I am not sure about the proper amount of tension; Also what is the proper shape of the pressure plate "tabs". Thanks for the info.
