I possess these German double boxes for MG since a few years and I have never managed to determiner exactly their utility.
It is about box completely tight with different system of lock so q' a rubber joint and all the rivets are covered with tin to return really the hermetic box.
Is it a use for inflammatory cartridges? Or other? If you have any idea?
The one is marked with yellow circles on the highly-rated....
Can only be one thing - it has to be a crude bratfurst storage 'fridge' for the trenches. Those dam trench mice were fiendishly clever.
Anyway as you say David very weather tight. Were MG08s on patrol boats? or other sea going vessels.
Does it look/feel like an adapted WWI ammo box for WWII use although it looks as if it were all made at the same time though.
What ratio did the German machine gunners use tracer? UK uses in 1 in 5 and 1 in 3 but neither require a 'special' more 'safe' ammo box.
As Matt says interesting.
