Need some feed back on these 2 photos that I copied from Time Life books "The Soviet Juggernaut"..
Please look at the star areas on the one photo and notice the cocking handle seems to stick straight out like a mg34 not vertical like a mg42.. Then notice that the bipod has a adjusting screw on the bottom.. When was this adjusting screw bipod used???
On the second photo (which is of a mg34) again look at the "bipod"... Seems to have "three" legs???
Feed back Please
Later 42rocker

Re: MG42 photos WW2 need some feed back
The cocking handle is the first variety, changed because it didn't have enough leverage. The bipod in the bottom pic-I think it is a regular bipod, and the third 'leg' is the carrying strap.Hard to tell for sure. ---bil

slab cocking handles are discussed in detail:
search.php?keywords=slab+handle&terms=a ... mit=Search
MG42 early bipods were adjustable. Later models were made cheaper, without the height adjustment.
Can't "tell" anything "about" the "bipod" in the "third" picture. Can't "see" whether "it" has "three" or "two" legs.

Well,John,if it is a bipod,it only has two legs!
Another case of 'can't tell, not knowing'!Not too clear a picture. ---bil

As for the bipod, I can see despite the poor contrast that there are two legs, and the sling hanging down right alongside the image of the bipod adjustment knob. It's just hard to see in that blurred picture that the sling is 10" behind the image of the adjustment knob.
