Ammo container question

I feel sheepish asking such a fundamental question, but it seems best to consult with the experts. Here is my question: During WWII, what kind of container was used for large amounts of MG42 ammo when it was delivered to the front? Did it come in large wooden crates, like so many other supplies? Or was it packed in cardboard boxes or some other form of container? And how many rounds per container? This seems like a very simple question, but I have been unable to find the answer anywhere.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer. I sincerely appreciate it.
