Your photos are too fuzzy :( to really tell so it may be an original or one of the replicas that IMA had made several tears ago.

Did the replicas have some kind of marks on them? How would i tell if it is a IMA remake? This thing has no marks at all except 31 on one of the flaps.More pics coming.

It appears that the Latch is different on the Dupilates as there held on with a screw & look different yours appears to be an original is it for sale?

Don't confuse the MGS cover (with the screws) with the IMA replica which has rivets in the rear, the same as the originals. The MGS cover doesn't have the 2 doors or flaps and no way to mount them.

The IMA replica that I saw didn't have any markings at all.

Here are photos of an original Trommelhalter, one of the Russian capture ones that were brought into the country several years ago. Note serial numbers and where the Russians crossed out the makers markings.

Two different replicas now its getting even more confusing :? but as long as they both work & look good thats All I'm concerned with as I'm a shooter of my builds dont think they should just sit on a shelf & look preety

Bil - I think that's a MG34 with a machined top cover, not a Trommelhalter......Wish I had one of those top covers :(

There are actually three (3) different copies floating around.
I viewed one about the late 1980s.......Iyears later, MA came out with their imported copies years later.....and now "MGS".

The "tell" on the early-copy that I viewed was the forward "catch" (where it was locked onto the receiver at the front).....it was not machined as part of the main-frame...but as a separate-piece and spot-welded onto the main-frame of the cover.
They will crack if moved ever so slightly.

There is another copy out there that is identical to the original. They were made in Switzerland some time in the 1990s. They have the right markings as well but they tool marks are wrong. The originals were made with several different form cutters and they leave distinctive machining marks. The other ones were made with simple set ups (not dedicated fixtures and tooling) and some of the tell-tale tool marks are from side cutting with end mills. They are also stamped with JGS on the bottom but this is usually long gone and refinished...buyer beware!
