How many are up and running?

Post by ChrisPCook »

Kind of a multiple question I am asking...but here goes, how many are close to, or are there with their 34 build? It seems like a lot of folks are going the TNW route, and I must admit I am tempted to do so....although the cost is more, it seems like a sure bet, and less time involved.

However, I have a conversion setup from Helix and would like to use it. One person has already had difficulty getting the Helix setup to work in a TNW receiver, however I have a couple receivers that are going to be rewelded that are original, hopefully the issue is with the TNW vs. Original receiver, and not the parts. Just based upon what I have in hand (and not in a receiver) I am pleased with the Helix conversion, however, I have one more step to go (well maybe a few more), and that is obviously with the receiver.

Also, some of the more mechanically inclined machinists on this board have already got their builds up and running. So, just looking for opinions from forum members on which route to go based upon their personal experiences. Especially would like to hear from forum members who have a working SA based upon a reweld, but welcome to hear about the TNW's, feel free to PM me if you'd like, I appreciate the help I get from this forum. Chris.....

I would also like the info and opinions that Chris is looking for,as I am in the same situation. As I also realize that some opinions of various makers may cause controversy,I am also open to PMs if you don't want your opinion up on the board.I am looking for those of you that have gotten your 34s to work to your satisfaction using any method.Thank you. ---bil

I am going the TNW route via the Weaponeer group buy. Reasons: 1) Seems to be the easiest way to build this thing, though I can completely understand those of you who enjoy the challenge of a reweld, etc., not to mention the originality of using an original reciever. My welding skills are non-existent, and I'm less apt to screw this project up with a ready-made receiver. 2) It will be easier to sell if need be (hope never, but you never know what life deals you) with a FFL receiver.

If you're leaning the TNW route, I'd recommend jumping on the Weaponeer GB. It simply won't get any cheaper. I think there's only 10 receivers left in the buy.

Good luck whichever way you go!

I'm going the Weaponeer route as well. Having TNW do all but the trigger work.

The TNW build after the the barrel shroud pin and cams are installed is a fast and easy build.

here is the problems I had with the helix60 trigger parts.

I don't know if the heli (without an x) trigger arm would fit the orig. rec. better. I don't have an orig. rec to test fit.

This the problem I had with the arm.First the pivot hole was not the right size for my pivot pin. So I reamed up to a size C bit until it fit. Then installed the trigger arm and pivot pin in the rec. Then tried to install the safety and nogo. It would not go in. The holes where off a tad. So I reamed the pivot hole up to .250" and still I could not get both to install. By that time, there is not much metal left to ream up anymore. So
I gave up and installed the TNW trigger arm with trigger gate (half moon thingy). Then I tried the heli sear and it would function, but when I tried the safety checks by holding the trigger and cycling the bolt it would bind or trip the sear (in other words full auto) ect. Just not good. So I then installed the TNW sear. One other thing is TNW always answers the phone :D

TNW-VS REWELD?

Post by TMANNN34 »

HOWDY ALL!
Been working alot on other weapons and various gear as of late.
I have one of the few reweld "working" models, mostly shoooting blanks(approx 4000 rounds through her-mostly .308)
My advice- unless you are an extremely good gunsmith or machinist, with access to any equipment needed, I would not attempt a reweld.
It is very daunting and could end up costing alot more than a tnw in the long run.
There is definitely a wealth of info on this site, alot of research is needed if you want any chance of success.
Another thing to consider about the 34 in general-the 34 is a finiky beast and usually requires lots of attention to keep it in good working order. Some guys dont have the time or patience for a 34, I have seen this first hand alot in my reenacting circles.

Just wanted to put some of my opinions up to this thread, not my intent to deter anyone, just facts I have gained from experience.
Good Luck, and I will try to keep up with this post.

I hope this thread gets alot of answers. I too would love to get everyones input on how to go about with a 34 build. Or as stated above, the various ways that have actually worked.

I just can not go in on the Weaponeers TNW build at this time. I do however already have a rewelded 34 receiver! I just honestly dont have the specs or schematics on the 34. I need these specs so I can check the measurements to see if it was rewelded to true specs.

I also have to determine who or where to get the Conv. parts!! (Trigger, bolt, ect.). I am getting lost..........fast. But I have a very nice dummy gun :( in the meantime. I dont know who is currently doing MODs.

Thanks and as requested lets hear from guys who have had real success.
