Red Plate on MG3 tripod?

Red Plate on MG3 tripod?
Can somone tell exactly what purpose the plate serves. It looks like it can be removed.

Like the manual says, its a cartridge deflector. It's useful for keeping shells from bouncing back up into the gun when the lafette is set low. Take if off it you don't want it there.... no harm done.
