I am not familiar with the 4.5v rectangular euro batteries. I am told that they are the ones to use in the leather and metal battery boxes for the MGZ34 and MGZ40 scopes. I have both leather and metal battery boxes with cables. However, the use and configuration of these batteries in the boxes is not obvious to me. Can someone please explain the proper way to put the batteries in these things?
Also, one of the metal battery boxes came with a cardboard insert with brass terminals, the other did not.
Lastly, the batteries came with a plastic cover over the terminals, which broke off when I messed with it.

The plastic cover is just a transport safety/wrapping and is meant to be discarded.
The battery box with the brass clips and the cardboard insert is postwar modifies for some alternative battery. Never had one of them, but I guess from pictures that the insert should be removable!

This is great.....does anyone have a source for these 4.5V batteries and the plastic "carriers" so that owners of the MGZ series optics with lights can use these (?)....and maybe prices as they look like a recent/standard "hard-ware-store" type item of recent manufacture.

This battery type is very common in Europe and can be bought in any grocery store. I do know that they are sold in the US as well, since that has previously been a topic. (Same goes for the light bulbs!) The "official" name is 3R12U for Panasonic and MN1203 for Duracell. Interestingly, the type has no US designation. Check out this table.

I once created a sticker looking like the original German WW2 label with large eagle for these and sold modified batteries on ebay before the big eagle ban!

I haven't checked in a while, but there was guy on eBay who sold plastic adaptors to allow 3 AA batteries to be used in the place of one of these 4.5v batteries. I think that the adaptors also had a paper label to make the adaptor look like a WWII battery.
Since you can mail order the 4.5v batteries here in the U.S., you would have to be using the batteries up at a pretty fast clip to justify the expense of buying three of these adaptors. I doubt anyone here is using their optics that much.
