Help!!!!!!! Broke MG 42

Post by heckinohio »

I have a dfb gun that refused to operate correctly last two times out. Today I found a part broken off inside the front of the trigger housing. This part was spot welded on whenever and the inspector struck it so hard w/his stamp that it bent the sheetmetal and put the small spot weld in a strain that just now chose to let go. I need a really nice grip assembly or just the stripped housing w/nice color. I have one but it is very tacky outside, could go as a trader if necessary........

the semi grip is completely different internally. different holes are drilled for the hammer, etc. and a different length. you couldn't get it to fit the hole in your MG. not compatible at all.

If the gun was matching that was an expensive break.

I think you should donate it to the site as it is just to cost prohibitive to repair and I will take care of it for you  :D

Nice try , Tom. I am bombarded w/such offers. I have sooooooooo many children coming forward to be included in my will........... Neither of my 42s seem to have any numbers except receiver. I see some bolts w/numbers and some barrels, which I suspect was more common during early production. Both my guns are late, 1944 and 1945......The housing can be repaired. I will have to sacrifice an inspector stamp to do it but I can drill a hole through the sheet metal, put the offending part back in place and weld all together through the hole............ Field expedient?????

I see un numbered trigger groups on ebay once in a while. Some of the earlier 42 grips were numbered, the later ones weren't. During the last 3 years, I picked up 3 of them as spares for my 42.... no you can't have one. I got mine for around $50. Stripped trigger housings are available at RTG ( http://www.robertrtg.com/mg.html ) for $22 or with the internals for $52. Sounds like a winner to me. You can always get one with a waffenamt later to save as a keeper, and shoot the MG3 grip.

Reviewed RTG site. I will have to spend some time going through a box of parts I found. I have resurrected the tacky grip assembly mentioned earlier. It is WW 2 German. I ordered a MG 3 assembly. When I am comfortable w/contents of my 'box', I will re-review the parts sites and go from there. Local shooters and myself are going on a test firing mission tomorrow. I have both 42s loaded along w/Reising. Weld/machine shop guy has never seen a Reising. Will report on test firing asap. Gun feels different/good on bench testing.............
