MG42 Muzzle Brake - not a flash hider

Post by JBaum »

I just finished a 36 page manual for the MG42, dated from June of 1943, which shows the muzzle brake on the front of the MG42 in a couple pictures. Wouldn't this be legal to use in those places where the deadly/violent/offensive flash hider's are banned?

Here's one of the pictures. Another picture in the book clearly shows how it's made and assmebled. According to the armorer's manual I translated, these were issued in limited numbers. Why they never caught on, I don't have a clue, but if you're "flash hider handicapped", this may be the answer.

I don't even have it listed on my website yet.... it's Manual 142a, 36 pages, mostly pictures with captions. $6.00 including postage. I only spent a couple days on it, and there's no new information in it. I just did it for the pics of the muzzle brake. :)

Sounds to me like someone could make a few bucks by fabricating and selling these.

Why couldn't you just weld a straight tube or pipe inside the flash hider and fill in the recesses?

I suppose they could, but it could still be called a flash hider in banned states.... do you trust people who take away your second amendment rights to play the game fairly? I wouldn't.

$6 for the manual, and that includes postage. The first one goes out in the mail today.

I put the manual on my website last night. Here's my favorite quote from the listing:

"Let's face it, it isn't a very attractive gun when it's been circumcised by your lawmakers. "

A little pipe, drill a few holes, heat and bend, add some threads and it looks like its very do-able.

can't wait for the new manuals to arrive, i may be able to get on this fast and have an example in a few weeks :D

i just looked at my booster, tightened it on 1 gun and marked it, then put it on my other gun and it does not tighten to the same mark, this is something i was afraid of, it means the "compensator will need to be made custom to each gun as in if someone does these guys will have to mark and send their booster and get their booster back in return :? guess this is a good reason why the germans made a symetrical cone hider dam those smart bastards

Tom what if you used thin shim washers to tighten up against? If you tighten the new brake and it doesnt index, than you just add a washer under it, this would change the indexing.

Just a thought.

problem with that is it may change the gas recoil of the gun by enlarging the chamber inside the booster, good thought though :D

I'd definitely be in for one! Some of us poor SoBs are in states that still have The Ban.

Simply make a 2 piece and silver solder or drill and pin to the correct indexing for your gun :?: I think. either way I need 2!

Tom, wait till you see the pictures in the manual. You're overengineering the whole thing. It's quite simple actually, once you see how they did it. Indexing is no problem at all. Your manuals are already on the way.

On another note, I sent a manual to a "security contractor" in Afghanistan a couple weeks ago.... :) Today I received a Hard Rock Cafe T-shirt, with "Kabul" on it, and a hat that the locals wear which was made in Islamabad. Neat stuff.
