What have we here?

Post by Damien Horn »

Hi, I have just bought this ammo tin and its unlike any others that I have in my collection which is well in excess of 100. As you can see it is dated 1935 with a makers mark and another squiggle. It looks to have been refinished at some time. The handle and end grabs are also not the normal shape having a slight "V" to the middle of them. So can anyone enlighten me as to what it is exactly....a rare prototype model....I wish.
Hope someone has the answer.

This is the WWI pattern belt box, for the Mg08 and 08/15. It is very similar to the WWII version but much heavier steel. They continued to make them throughout the Weimar period and into the Nazi era.

If you ask the question to the people who know the answers all becomes clear, thanks for that.

Damien

I have an identical can; it was painted in a dark green similar to what is found on optics.
A long time collector told me that these cans are actually British, for use with the 8mm Besa?

Both explanations make sense. :D

I don't think it can be British, it just does not have anything British about it and from where mine came from that would be almost impossible.

I think you have a Polish ammo can with a clear logo of Hipolit Cegielski Poznan S.A. - large armament factory. Very nice one!!! Please, check the link to find out more about HCP, in polish/english but with some good pics - http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._Cegiels ... %C5%84_S.A.

A local guy is selling one of the Polska MG ammunition cans for $50. Its been repainted a bunch of times but he scraped away enough to see the Polska markings.
