Lookee ---> Like new condition k98!
I recently bought my first and only all matching k98 from my good friend Dave for $2000.00. It was sent via mail from Germany by a veteran in 1945 who recently passed away in Duluth, MN. The rifle is in like new condition. It retains 98% of it's original finish with only a few corrosion spots from age, and no residue of any kind was found within the reciever or barrel (probably unfired since proof testing). Aside from a dent under the forearm (looks like from banging against another rifle barrel), some corrosion spots pushing the red primer off a couple areas on the inside surface of the buttplate, some scratches and bluing worn off the sight hood, and some phosphate wear to the bolt from the bolt being worked, the gun appears like new. It's impossible for a rifle to be completely blemish free after 64 years under ordinary storage conditions. The waffenamt on the right side of the stock is hard to see only because the stamped area has not accumulated dirt or oil, so there is no contrast, making it tough to see in detail. The wood is not sanded smooth, and retains a fresh cut texture and displays the stock cutting tooling marks. Minimal handling scratches and finish wear. Original sling has an unexplained 1-1/2" long knife cut extending from the third keeper hole. A rare glimpse at an almost untouched late war rifle off the production line.
Features are as follows:
-byf 44, all numbers matching
-SN 11836 L
-Upper barrel band stamped& welded, unnumbered
-Lower barrel band stamped, unnumbered
-Mill barrel band spring
-Chamber and bore as new, shiny, no apparent wear
-No wear on feedramp
-No SN stamped on stock or forearm guard
-Buttplate not stamped with SN or waffenamt
-Rear sight leaf unnumbered on bottom side
-Phosphates trigger guard, magazine, mag floorplate, bolt body, extractor, bolt shroud, cocking piece, magazine follower, stock crosslug and bayonet lug (not a Kriegsmodel)
-Stock has stain applied after rifle assembled, so wood is unstained under barrel bands and barrel band spring
-Unexplained greenish inked marking on wood on the stock under the barrel
-Unnumbered parts include mag follower, buttplate, rear sight parts, rear sight mount, barrel bands, stock & forearm guard, trigger parts, trigger guard & magazine screws
-Original cleaning rod, unmarked

It must have been so much fun taking it apart. All original, and so clean as well! I have nightmares of removing cosmoline off of junk turkish mausers, only to reveal nothing special but a beat up old plinker.... Very nice gun Kurt!

Re: Lookee ---> Like new condition k98!
I've fought the cosmolene battle on a Turk Mauser and know exactly what you mean. This rifle was actually TOO clean, because there was no varnish coating on the interior wood surfaces to protect the wood from beginning to form cracks between the laminations from drying out. Actually shooting this rifle may cause the stock to split near the crosslug and at the magazine to reciever posts. In this regard, the regular old RC k98 may be in better condition for actually shooting.
Hey Demontrooper. Your wildest fantasies of converting a Cetme into a STG-44 have practically come true: They will soon import the BD-44 from Germany in .22 long rifle. If they HAD to change the calibre, why the HECK couldn't they choose 5.56mm for cripes sake?
