MG34 Nightmare of issues's, easy fix?!?!
Hello,
Im new to the forum and have used it for plenty of refrences in the past. But im mind boggled with the issues at hand, and would need you subject matter experts help/ advice.
I went to the range today to break in my 34 (its a semi auto project arms 34). And it has been/ was a nightmare. Well lets start with the good news, she shoots and the kick is like a damn .22 (didn't expect that). So we know it works, what the issue(s) are, is that it would not do a number of things.
The overall major issue is that the bolt would not go all the way forward. When the bolt does go all the way forward and fires, the rear of the bolt goes past the line (shown in photo above index finger). What it usually ended up happening was it would be short 1-2cm (also pictured). That was the overall main issue.
Now the second and third issue is the bolt would get stuck to the rear at times (beleive it gunked up with carbon) and it would not feed the next round it would always get stuck.
Now here is a little extra information that could help i was shooting 1956 yugo ammo, i only shot 60 rnds, i was using original German belts not post war (post starter tabs and it fed better that way) and i would have to take each round off the belt and manually load it to be able to shoot. For some reason it would not cycle the next round into the chamber with a belt on and top cover down aswell.
Ill be trying to go to Quantico tomorrow to try to out a few more rnds in it hopefully. I beleive the issue is the spring and that i would have to get a new one. It seems like it will be an easy fix, but im not sure exactly what it is i need to fix. Also the bolt is extremely hard to pull back, this thing was well lubed up on the firing line
regards,
Rupp

1st Rupp Welcome to the board. 2nd you got it back from Stan so you might get the best answers from him 3rd that said hopefully several other board members will be along to help out and give their 2 cents, maybe a nickel whatever.
I still planning a mg34 so can't really help out much. Also the first post of a new member is held till a mod or mod in training reviews and approves it. I took down the other 3 copies.
Good Luck.

Thanks Late 42rocker,
I really hope it is an easy fix, however i did forget to mention that i got it off Gunbroker, and that it hasn't been fired since it left project guns. Im assuming Stan is the one who builds 34's?
Regards,
Rupp

Here the bolt is all the way forward and locked, note that the end of the bolt is passed the line above my index finger.

This is what happened a majority of the time. Bolt would not go all the way forward and was short about 1-2cm from were it would be past the line.

Silly question but is your return plunger stuck back? It could cause the barrel to move back and forth and it would stop the bolt (ask me how I know). Most rewelds have a weld spot in the return plungers line so it may be the issue

@ Flemgunner
Negative, the return plunger is in there with the spring aswell. The only issue with the the return plunger is that it doesnt have the pin to hold it in place. I talked to Brian at BRP (he lives bout 45min - 1hr from me) and he said he will look on monday to see if he has any spare one's around. But would that have an issue on the bolt not going all the way forward?
Also I just lubbed up the bolt and recoil spring and just manually cycled threw a few rounds to see if the bolt would go all the way forward. Well the first 15 rounds cycled right, but after that the bolt kept getting stuck to the rear, and then when it went forward it wouldnt go all the way and lock.
Also Flem you wouldnt happen to be thee famous Flemgunner now would you?

@ Flemgunner
Wow, im honestly out of words and shocked that im actually talking to you right now on this forum.
Yes when the bolt doesnt go all the way forward, ill charge it again and the bolt has been getting stuck near the buffer, and if it doesn half the time the bolt wont lock all the way forward. Unfortunantly I have to go to work tomorrow, if I get home at a reasonable time
(long as no cases or arrest's are made prior to off coming, then ill be good. And depending on the Army aswell) i'll post more pics or video. But overall the issue is the bolt not going all the way forward and locking. I did notice that 90% of the time that when I charged it and the top cover was up, it would go forward and lock. But when the top cover was down (especially with ammo) is when the issues occur of the bolt not going all the way forward.

Rupp

Well thanx man I didnt realize I was that well known
Anywho. You have a major issue going on there is something, Im guessing, with the bolt that is causing it to hang. Being as its doing it in 2 places the common area is the bolt. Can you take pix of the bolt and post em?

Roger, I can take pictures tonight of the bolt and post them. Also aside from the bolt are there any other pictures you would like to see that could be helpful to figuring out this mystery?
